Moxi Matching:

Frequently Asked Questions — for recipients

What makes Moxi Matching different?

Moxi Matching is a first-of-its-kind embryo donation matching platform created by three women on a mission to change the landscape of embryo donation. The co-founders have a combined 30+ years of professional experience in the field of genetic counseling and mental health in reproductive medicine, and personal experience as donors and a recipient.

We created EM•POWER with Moxi to provide education and support for the embryo donation community, and Moxi Matching to help donors and recipients match in a safe and supported way.

How are donors vetted?

We do our best to vet donors in 3 ways:

  1. We ask for a photo ID to verify that donors are who they say they are.

  2. We ask for their embryology report to ensure they are providing the correct information about their remaining embryo(s) that are available for donation.

  3. We work to confirm that they have legal authorization to donate their embryos.

While we can’t make any guarantees, by gathering this information on the front end, before donors are able to submit their profiles, we hope this vetting process will decrease the chances of an unexpected roadblock. All legal elements will also be further reviewed when the match gets to the legal step of the process.

What do I need to do to qualify as a recipient?

We welcome recipients of any race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identification, and marital status.

We have a few requirements:

  • Medically cleared to carry a pregnancy or planning to work with a gestational carrier.

  • Single individuals must be under 55 years old, while couples should have at least one partner under 55 (per ASRM recommendations). Recipients over 50 planning to carry a pregnancy must be established patients at a clinic willing to accept and transfer donated embryo(s).

We ask for two verification documents prior to a facilitated match meeting:

  1. We ask you to complete a criminal background check. At the core of our organization is the health, safety, and wellbeing of children. A simple criminal background check helps donors to feel comfortable meeting potential recipients online, so that their focus can be on finding the right match, rather than anxiety over unknown elements. Before your profile is able to go live, we ask that you complete a background check with our contracted company, Background Check Central. Once your profile is submitted, we will send you a link to complete and pay for your background check. If you have a partner, you will be required to both complete background checks prior to going live on the platform. The background check searches back 7 years and checks for conviction of felony child abuse or neglect, domestic violence, a crime against children, or other violent crime. Other offenses that come up on an applicant's background check will be handled on a case-by-case basis so that donors can be informed of extenuating circumstances and make informed decisions about matching.

  2. We ask you to share medical records documenting a recent uterine evaluation or a medical clearance letter from your doctor, or your intention to work with a gestational carrier (surrogate). Those documents are not made visible to donors on the platform, but will be assessed by our team prior to your profile being activated on Moxi Matching. You can request this document from your fertility doctor. If you have not established care with a fertility doctor, we recommend that step before seeking a match.

What medical/genetic information will I receive from the donor?

Because EM•POWER with Moxi and Moxi Matching was co-founded by a genetic counselor, we can assure you the medical/genetic profile questions we ask are very thorough. Donors complete a medical/genetic family history in a separate section of their profile, which is not made publicly visible on the platform. However, if a facilitated match meeting is requested, we will share that medical/genetic section of the profile directly with the interested recipient, as we know family medical/genetic history can play a factor into your decision-making. We also recommend genetic counseling once a match is established, so that you can have a genetics professional assess the genetic risk factors and give you support in understanding how to best utilize genetic information for your child(ren)’s future healthcare.

How is Moxi Matching a safer space than Facebook?

Matching on Facebook can be challenging particularly because there is no shared understanding or professional moderation that can simplify donors' and recipients' journeys. Moxi Matching operates on a secure software platform that abides by HIPAA restrictions, and lists only verified donors who have provided a valid photo ID, submitted their embryology report, and acknowledged that they have legal authorization to donate their remaining embryos to the best of their knowledge.  Further, all parties have access to education and professional support on the platform. This means that on Moxi Matching, you will spend your time looking at serious donors who understand the process and are ready to find their match.

How is Moxi Matching different from a clinic embryo donation program?

Most clinic embryo donation programs are not able to manage the process of connecting donors and recipients so that they can get to know each other and decide if they are a good match. That means recipients may be choosing an embryo or set of embryos with limited information about the donors and limited relationship options. Different clinics have different protocols, and many only allow for a recipient to achieve one pregnancy (meaning additional sibling embryos aren’t allowed), which means a cohort of embryos could be shared among several recipients resulting in several children born who share the same genetics but don’t know each other. Some clinics continue to try and operate in a completely “anonymous” way and don’t provide any way for consensual contact in the future. While we know that direct-to-consumer DNA testing has rendered anonymity obsolete, not having proper legal contracts or an agreed upon method for future contact means how, if or when your child may connect with genetic relatives is unpredictable and unknown. With direct matching, match facilitation, mental health support, and legal consultations, you can make sure that your agreement is written in a way that makes sense for you and your family. With a clinic embryo donation program, you may also receive less medical/genetic information about the donors, which can compromise your child’s healthcare decision-making in the future.

Can I communicate directly with potential donors?

Yes, but only after each side first agrees to/attends a facilitated match meeting and later consents to share contact information. When you are interested in a potential donor, you can request a facilitated match meeting and our team will reach out to the donor to see if they are interested in exploring a match. At a facilitated match meeting, our staff will host a Zoom room to help you break the ice, and facilitate the discussion of specific questions. After the match meeting, our team will reach out to you to see if you'd like to share contact information to continue communicating on your own, if you'd like additional facilitated meetings, or whether you'd like to decline to pursue the match further. Our goal is to make these conversations more comfortable, and help you to hone in on the elements of a match that are important to you.

How do I initiate a match facilitation meeting?

All you need to do is click the button "request a match meeting" on the profile of the donor you are interested in. Our team will then reach out to the donor to see if there is interest on their side. The fee for each facilitated match meeting is $125 and the responsibility of the recipient.

Can I explore multiple donors at the same time?

Yes, exploring or “dating” multiple donors can be part of the process, however, we ask that you respect the time and emotional reserve of the donors and only request facilitated match meetings that you feel seriously about.

Can the EM•POWER team help me find a good match?

Possibly. We believe that only you (and your partner if there is one) will know when you’ve found the right match. However, we offer additional individual and couples support sessions to help you consider your options, process your feelings, and communicate adaptively with your partner (if there is one).  We will support your decision-making through educational offerings, support groups and workshops, as well as referrals to qualified mental health professionals in your area as needed.

What if it doesn’t feel like a good match after meeting?

Getting to know a potential donor may lead to a match, or it may not. You will not share direct contact information until after a facilitated match meeting. Therefore,  if you have a facilitated match meeting and decide you don't want to continue pursuing the match, simply let our team know and we can share the news that a match is not right. We can also provide support to both parties when hard feelings come up.

What is Moxi Journey Management (MJM)?

After you’ve matched, there will be various logistical steps to complete. With Moxi Journey Management, we help you manage every step of your journey. We help you understand the needs of your unique match and your options for where the embryo transfer takes place. We oversee the administrative process and coordinate the paperwork and communication with the clinic(s)and/or storage facility, and we connect you to ancillary professionals for various consultations and clearances. We also support you in navigating the early stages of this unique relationship.

What is your refund policy?

At EM•POWER with Moxi, we are committed to providing a transparent and efficient experience for our recipients. While our services are designed to facilitate meaningful connections and a streamlined path to parenthood through embryo donation, we understand that circumstances may change, leading to the need for refunds. This refund policy outlines the refund process for recipient fees associated with Moxi Matching.

Platform Access for 6 Months ($100): Platform access fees are non-refundable.

Facilitated Match Meeting ($125 for each meeting): Facilitated match meeting fees are non-refundable.

Background Check ($65 per person): Background check fees are non-refundable once the background check process has been initiated.

Moxi Journey Management ($5500):

Refunds for the Moxi Journey Management fee will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are subject to the following conditions:

    • A full refund will be issued if a match falls through before the needs assessment.

    • A partial refund of $5000 will be issued if a match falls through after the needs assessment but before administrative work has begun.

    • A partial refund may be granted based on the progress made once administrative work has begun. The amount refunded will be determined at the discretion of the EM•POWER team.

    • A refund will not be issued if a match falls through after journey management has been completed. However, we will consider discounting a future journey management fee if the recipients wish to match with different donors.

Is Moxi Journey Management required if matching on Moxi Matching?

Yes. This is the model we have landed on to make our services sustainable for the long run. We have spent several years trying to find the most fair way to provide our services. We want there to be a minimal fee on the front end so that people can affordably explore this option and match on their terms rather than rely on a third party to do the matching for them. This means more choices and more transparency—all without a hefty concierge matching fee.

Donors come to us because they feel safe in our hands and want us to help with the process. They want to have our support when it comes to understanding the process and navigating the early stages of a relationship. It can be very burdensome for the donor if handled without experience—which can negatively impact the relationship between the donor and recipient. And because embryo donation is completely altruistic (you cannot pay a donor or pay for an embryo) we want to make sure our donors are moving through the process in a way that is easiest for everyone and helps set up a comfortable relationship.

Clinics come to us because embryo donation is logistically complicated and most clinics are not set up to help their patients navigate all the different components or provide the necessary support to all the parties. With our >30 years combined experience in this field, we can make it more seamless for the clinics, so that they refer more former patients who would be willing to donate, and they will be able to say yes to facilitating the medical side of an embryo donation for a recipient.

Of course, we also do a lot of work on the front end, educating the professionals and clinics we work with, in outreach to patients who have remaining embryos and are in need of help in the decision-making phase, vetting our donors, confirming that they have legal authorization to donate (in the case of embryos created with other gamete donors) and verifying the embryology report, among other things. We also provide education and support to both donors and recipients free of charge, because we really believe in making embryo donation more accessible and understood.

In sum, we hope this model will appeal to the embryo donation community so that we can stay sustainable, while still making the exploration fees reasonable. However, if you're interested in simply matching and less support, you might find a match on Facebook, NRFA, or Miracles Waiting.

How long will I wait to find a match?

It’s hard to know how long it will take to find a match, or if you will be able to find the right fit on the platform. We do not have a waiting list because Moxi Matching is an open matching platform. You can optimize your chances of matching by sharing authentically about yourself in your profile, so that donors can get a sense of who you are and what donating to you would look like.

Can I remain anonymous as a recipient?

It is not possible to arrange an anonymous match on our platform. However, the relationship option you decide on with your donor can be one with little contact or contact only if children are interested in the future.  Matching in an open way generally means a donor wants to know a little bit about the recipient and that a consensual way to connect is established through the legal process. If you and your match decide you do not want to exchange contact information and prefer what is often referred to as a semi-open relationship, we offer the option to join Donor Nexus, a registry for donor conception, where you can have necessary contact with each other as needed. Here are some of our education materials about the spectrum of relationship options that might be of help: https://education.empowerwithmoxi.com/

How much information should I share in my profile?

How much and what you share on your profile is up to you. However, you should understand that a limited profile may not be of interest to a donor. Donors who elect to match in an open way often are interested in learning about you and your path to embryo donation. Donors often connect to photos and personal interests and information, so we encourage you to share what you see fit. We also encourage you to be honest and transparent about yourself and about any deal breakers. Once you connect with a potential match, you are free to share additional information directly.

Will my identifying information be seen on the platform?

No. Your identifying information (first and last name, phone number, and address) will not be seen on the platform. You will be asked to create a profile name that will be visible on the platform.
